Daniel island, sc
Hord Architects was chosen as Associate Architects to Franck & Lohsen Architects of Washington, DC for this brand new parish church campus on Daniel Island in Charleston, SC. This design borrows from many elements within the great tradition of church architecture in Charleston. The pair of belltowers and rose window form an imposing facade addressing a main thoroughfare of the island and orients the church in relation to the Catholic high school across the street and residential crescent garden.
The nave seats 800 and is capped by a 170-foot tall spire over the altar. Several liturgical elements were salvaged from a shuttered monastery and carefully incorporated into the design. To complete the campus, future phases plan a garden cloister surrounded by administration buildings and parish hall.
Hord Architects was honored to receive the 2024 Palladio Award in the Commercial, New Design & Construction Less Than 30,000 S.F. Category for this project. The church will be published in an upcoming issue of Traditional Building Magazine.
